Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid which most commonly manifests in the soft tissue of the arm or leg, but can also affect other parts of the body. This disruption can be caused by a genetic flaw in the lymphatic system (primary lymphedema) or can be caused more commonly as a result of surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy (secondary lymphedema).

Today, Lymphedema is most commonly found in breast cancer patients but can be a result of other surgical treatments or procedures.
Lymphedema Treatment | Atlanta Area

The most effective treatment for Lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy, also known as CDT. CDT consists of a combination of hygiene/topical skin care, manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging/compression, and remedial exercises. During CDT, patients will undergo two phases of treatment.
  1. Intensive phase
This will consist of daily treatments for 2-4 weeks to get the limb swelling back to its normal or closest to normal size. This will include skin and nail care, MLD, bandaging, and exercises.

  2. Treatment phase
This will consist of compression garments during the day, meticulous skin and nail care, exercises, and MLD as needed. See our Compression Fitting page for more information on compression garments.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage / Lymphatic Massage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, (also known as MLD),  is one of the specialty massage services we offer at Tuscan Sun. Developed in the 1930s by two physicians, MLD is also a safe, effective, and gentle approach to cleansing the body's tissues. MLD is a gentle manual form of massage that manually moves lymph fluid out of the affected area, stimulates lymphatic vessels, and breaks down hardened or fibrotic tissue, creating a healthy tissue environment. It consists of precise rhythmical hand movements and is helpful in draining excess fluid from the tissues as well as having a detoxifying effect.

Because MLD eliminates wastes from body tissue, it is used as part of our treatment protocol for Lymphedema. In addition to Lymphedema, it is also an effective treatment for conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Tonsillitis, burns, allergies, the common cold, and more. Scientific studies and years of clinical experience show that MLD is generally effective in treating more than sixty medical conditions. Many plastic surgeons may also recommend MLD for patients recovering from surgery to help speed tissue recovery.

Other Benefits Of MLD:
  • Removes metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria and foreign substances from the tissues
  • Alleviates pain by reducing pain signals to the brain
  • Relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, thus helping to relieve stress

Reviews

Sandi is great. My daughter has lymphedema and Sandi is a remarkable person. She showed such empathy for my daugther when we first met and offered to help her with this condition. I wish we had met when the problem first came about. We all love Sandi and her warm caring spirit. Thanks Sandi.

Hope and Anticipation! I came to Tuscan with the hope and anticipation that Sandi could help me with my edema involving my left foot/ankle and both hands. I've had this discomfort for years and I've become concerned over time that there would not be any change or improvement, Sandi has given me hope that she can treat my condition with MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) and exercises. After 1 visit she has shown me her expertise and I already see results.
Amazing Results! Sandi Stephens of Tuscan Sun is 'hands down' the best massage therapist I've used. I teach high school and the stress can pile on pretty quickly affecting my physical health in many ways. Sandi is known throughout the region for her great work with lymphedema patients, but you don't have to have lymphedema to gain great benefits from a master massage therapist. When I see Sandi, my headaches don't happen, my neck doesn't hurt, and my spiritual space is larger. I highly recommend Tuscan Sun.

I look forward to my lymphedema massage treatments each month. The circulation in my lower extremities are improved and they feel like they are new!Sandi is an excellent therapist with a very pleasing and relaxing personality, which adds to the therapeutic treatment.
